A year ago today God called home one of hip hop’s greatest entertainers. Heavy D was born Dwight Arrington Myers on May 24, 1967 in Mandeville, Jamaica. His family moved to Mount Vernon, NY in the early 70’s where he was raised.
Heavy D & the Boyz got their start in hip hop at Uptown Records, they were the first group signed to Andre Harrells’ fledgling label. They released their debut album Living Large in 1987. The mc affectionately known as “The Overweight Lover” released 8 more albums between 1989-2011.
Heavy was also an accomplished actor, appearing in such movies as Life and Tower Heist. He also had recurring roles on the television shows Roc,Living Single, and The Tracy Morgan Show. He also was a music producer and executive, becoming the first rapper to run a major label when he took over as president of Uptown Records in the mid 90’s.
Heavy D’s last performance was at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards,he died just 9 days later on November 8,2011. He died at the age of 44 in Los Angeles, Ca at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His cause of death was pulmonary embolism (PE).
Heavy D was one of the most likable figures in the history of hip hop, and today we celebrate his life and career.
